Joseph L Stichter was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, October 30th, 1813. He was the grandson of Conrad Stichter, who immigrated to America from Lubeck, Germany, in the year 1750. He was well known locally for being a respected merchant and philanthropist. He was a leading member of the Masonic Order since 1834, and has filled various important offices, including that of District Deputy Grand Master.
